English & ESL

I’m Charlotte C. Nielsen and I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Yale and a Masters in Environmental Science from University of Maryland. I have been teaching English, Writing and Science from primary years through high school, in international schools for the past fifteen years. After many years of living abroad, I have recently returned home to my native New York and I am excited about the prospect of sharing my appreciation for different cultures and different perspectives with my students.

Teaching is a second career for me. Prior to teaching, I was an Environmental Scientist, researching and reporting on the environmental effects of large projects and developing plans for mitigating those effects. This experience has made me passionate about forging real-world connections for my students, between the subjects they learn and the world around them. During my time in Hong Kong, I worked on projects for an NGO called Ocean Recovery Alliance. These included developing an environmental science and activism curriculum about water resources for middle schoolers in Hong Kong, as well as an interactive museum exhibit based on concepts from this curriculum.

In addition to my commitment to environmentalism, I am passionate about creative writing and have taken time off in the last academic year, in order to pursue some of my projects in poetry and memoir/personal essay writing. I try to imbue all my English classes with a love of the richness and beauty of the language, as well as an appreciation for the precision and rules which govern its expression.

I love to teach because I love to learn and like any true believer, I want to share the joy that I derive from learning, with others. I cannot conceive of any person without the capacity to enjoy learning and I suppose it is that which drives me to find that secret mechanism in every student that will unlock that “lifelong learner”.
