Hello, I'm Karen Appelbaum, an educator with 30 years' experience teaching high school and college English and history courses. I love seeing students "catch on" and become confident in themselves, and my approach is to make learning interesting and enjoyable. As a native New Yorker, I earned both my Bachelor's degree in English and German, and my Master's degree in English, at Binghamton University, State University of New York. I moved to Georgia in the early 90's and began teaching Humanities and English in the Technical College System of Georgia, and jumped into high school teaching in 2009, where I have taught all offered English courses, World History and World History AP, and started my high school's dual enrollment program in 2013; I also continue to teach as an adjunct through local colleges. I'm a lifelong learner myself, earning my Education Specialist degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Alabama 10 years ago. It's a joy to work with high school students on both their academics and on their plans for the future by tutoring them for the ACT/SAT, coaching them in study skills and time management, and helping them complete college and scholarship applications with killer essays. I look forward to working with students here to contribute to their successes!

In my down time, I enjoy reading historical fiction, watching Formula 1 racing with my husband, and spending time with my grown children when they come to visit. A fun fact about me is that I've been teaching swimming lessons since college, and now I'm teaching the children of children I taught years ago!
