Social Studies

Hello, my name is Dr. Karen Chernoff! I love teaching history, and I would be delighted to teach or tutor you, helping you develop your critical thinking skills as history students. The discipline of history is unique because of its connections to all other disciplines. I will help advance your skills with document analysis, communication, research, and writing. Further, while we learn history together, you will be historically conscious about and learn to coherently write about the patterns and perspectives of the past that help to understand the present.

My love of history comes from my personal knowledge acquired from my travels and the cultural understanding I gained—this knowledge helps me connect to diverse types of people and learners. I was born in Brooklyn, NY, and then spent my teenage years in Germany and Florida. I taught history in Florida, Brazil, China, and New York.

My professional knowledge comes from teaching myriad history subjects and collaborating with others in each new academic setting. For my first degree, I majored in history; with my Master’s degree, I majored in humanities; for my Ph.D. I majored in Curriculum and Instruction. As I relocated, I read more and increased my content and professional knowledge. With my degrees and by teaching grades 9-12 IBDP history (for over two decades), AP United States (US) and regular US history, AP European history, Asian and Latin American history, I am excited to help you hone your skills for your IB examinations and history Regents exams.
