English
Hi, I’m Makayla Kocher—a dedicated educator who inspires a love of learning through writing and creative expression. For me, teaching and learning inspire joy and encourage students to pursue their curiosities while fostering a sense of community. As an English writing instructor, I adopt a dynamic teaching approach that respects my students' diverse backgrounds, experiences, and goals. My philosophy centers on creating an adaptable learning environment that meets their needs.
I've taught college writing and reading courses, assisted the University of Wyoming’s first-year writing program, and worked as a professional writing tutor, guiding undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty members. Additionally, I have served as a freelance copyeditor, proofreader, and beta reader, collaborating with academics on research projects and debut authors on their creative works.
Originally from Colorado, I cherish the outdoors, community life, and the vibrant cultural fabric of the Mountain West. My love for photography and painting, combined with these roots, continually shapes my identity as both an educator and an individual. I earned my BA in Writing Studies—with minors in Honors, Anthropology, and Museum Studies—from the University of Wyoming, where I received the Outstanding Graduating Female Student in Academics, Service, and Leadership (Spitaleri Award).
Driven by my passion for writing, I earned an MA in Rhetoric and Composition and Public Humanities from the University of Wyoming. There, I honed my skills in English rhetoric and composition while exploring connections with museum studies and anthropology. I was honored to receive one of the four Outstanding Graduate Assistant Teaching Awards, the highest distinction for graduate instructors at the University. Notable achievements include contributing to a published Cultural Anthology in Reykjavik, Iceland (2023) with Global Treks and Adventures and securing grant funding for my thesis research in Ireland and the UK, titled “Look, Look Again, and Look Beyond: Exploring Rhetoric and a Habit of Attention in Museums.”
Beyond the classroom, I am a lifelong learner and adventurer. I enjoy spending time outdoors with my dog Karli, exploring photography and painting, cooking, baking, and continuously discovering new skills that fuel my curiosity. For me, teaching is about inspiring joy in learning, empowering students to pursue their passions, and building a community where everyone can flourish.
I look forward to teaching courses and collaborating with students at all levels.
